The Future of Human Resources – What Does It Look Like?

Deloitte just debuted a fascinating study of human capital and how such innovations as artificial intelligence are altering the future of workforce hiring, training and retention. It’s definitely worth a read (or at least a browse) and site visitors can download it without providing company or personal information. “In 2019, an intensifying combination of economic, social, and political issues is forcing HR and business leaders to learn to…reinvent their organizations around a human focus,” the report introduction states.

Rather than predicting a drop in available jobs as a result of AI and automation (as other reports have suggested), Deloitte sees the challenge from the reverse perspective. With declining family sizes, an aging existing workforce, and a new workforce coming of age with different expectations, the report suggests  organizations should realign their HR practices around their workers.

They also believe that firms will not be able to hire the talent they need and should instead focus on developing it from within. These activities fall into four “buckets”: accessing talent, boosting learning (in the workplace and outside of it), encouraging internal mobility, and outsourcing HR functions that aren’t talent focused from “the messy back office” to outside providers that use technology, including the Internet/cloud, to deliver services.
