Human Resources Issues for Restaurants: Why You Can’t Ignore Them

By Benefits, Payroll, Safety
It’s always amazed us at MarathonHR how many restaurants—even fairly large ones—don’t have a Human Resources (HR) department, or even an HR professional on staff who handles payroll, workers’ comp claims, and other issues that restaurants face. They also may not outsource any of their HR functions to another firm. In the most bare-bones situations, the owner does it all. We have worked with a lot of restaurants and have seen, firsthand, that not having…

Family Medical Leave Act Forms Extended through 2021 – Are They Ready to Use?

By Benefits, Legal
The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has announced that its Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) certification forms and notices are valid for three more years, until Aug. 31, 2021. (The DOL must submit its FMLA forms to the Office of Management and Budget for approval every three years to ensure the FMLA certification and notice process isn't too bureaucratic.) In late August 2018, seven forms were certified. The DOL didn't make any substantive changes to the forms,…

SHRM Weighs in on Employee Handbook Issues

By Benefits, Legal
Two prominent human resources lawyers, the senior legal editor for the Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and a legal expert for HR information website ExpertHR, have jointly published an opinion asserting that “cookie-cutter” employee handbooks are no longer practical for many employers, especially those operating in multiple states. As the basis for their recommendation, they cite the trend toward federal deregulation and the volume of both state and local legislative actions. As detailed in the…

Flu Season Has Yet to Peak—Keep Employees on Alert

This year’s flu season has been especially dangerous—and deadly—and CDC experts say it isn’t peaking, yet. With cumulative hospitalizations at the highest rate since the CDC has been tracking them, employers should remind personnel to stick with flu prevention strategies at least through March, if not longer.…

Employee Benefits—Managing Them for Everyone

By Benefits
Employee benefits have become increasingly complicated for business owners as they struggle to address them for very different generations of workers. Baby boomers may want time off for elder care, while millennials may want extra paid vacation or flex time. Organizations can address these concerns without negatively affecting the…

Family Leave Rules Are a Potential Landmine for Employers

By Benefits, Legal
Even with record numbers of employers winning Family Medical Leave Act lawsuits, family-leave related issues remain complex and treacherous for most firms to navigate. The fact that Georgia has no state equivalent of the federal FMLA, and that firms of fewer than 50 are not subject to its requirements, doesn’t make compliance any easier. From pregnancies to off-the-job injuries, situations that temporarily remove a worker from his place of employment must be treated with care.…

Health Insurance Options May Expand for Small Businesses

By Benefits
The U.S. House of Representatives recently took action to make it easier for small businesses to offer employee health coverage through association health plans (AHPs). These plans, which offer businesses and other association members access to more affordable insurance plans than they can procure individually, have long been appealing but not widely available. If this bill passes the Senate and the President signs it into law, all that may change for the better. On March…

Big Firms = Big Benefits, but What About the Little Guys?

By Benefits
You may have heard earlier this month that Netflix announced that their employees who are new moms or dads may take off as much time as they'd like during the first year following their child's birth or adoption. With this, Netflix has joined other major companies like Google and Facebook, who have implemented generous parental policies that are vastly different than the mandatory parental leave policies of most other companies in America. Under the Family…
